Glutathione: Glutathione (GSH) is a water
soluble antioxidant that is found in all cells of the body.
Glutathione is the most important and abundant naturally
occurring cellular antioxidant, and is concentrated in organs
that are exposed to and therefore susceptible to damage from
free radicals and toxins, e.g., the liver, spleen, kidneys,
eye lens, lungs, and skin. GSH as a co-enzyme supports many
essential metabolic processes. Low levels of glutathione have
been associated with over 50 diseases.
|
| The three main roles of Glutathione in
the body |
|
|
- Antioxidant: GSH serves as the first line of
defense for protection against cellular oxidative
stress caused by free radicals, peroxides and other
oxidizing agents, and is the body’s premier
antioxidant. GSH reduces free radicals and toxins to
water and/or water-soluble products that are excreted
from the body through the urine.
- Cell Function: GSH is important for t he integrity
and function of membranes and blood platelets, and is
also involved in the transport of amino acids into
cells. GSH plays an important role in spermatogenesis
and in DNA synthesis and repair. GSH levels decrease
with age and must be replenished for optimal cell
function.
- Immune System Enhancer: GSH serves as an immune
system enhancer by regulating the formation of white
blood cells (such as B-cell and T-cell lymphocytes).
